For Barrayar application
OOC
Name: Shelly!
Preferred pronouns: she!
Over 16?: Y
Contact: Shellzabellz on plurk or shellzabellz@gmail!
Time zone: mountain
IC
Type: OU
Name: Whirl of Polyhex
Canon: Transformers IDW (More than Meets the Eye)
Canon point: end of issue 53 (including the flashback to what happened between the last two panels from 54)
Age:
um. I am very glad exact age is not needed because "roughly 5 million" is the answer. He is old as balls.
Appearance:
Normally he is a 30ft tall murdercopter.
or shows up occasionally like this
But in game he's going to be showing up and hanging out in a real person body. Specifically this one.

Personality:
Whirl was the autobot voted most likely to defect, twice.
Whirl also was winner of the 'most people dressed up as you' to the 'who would you like to punch' party. He beat Megatron. That is impressive.
To put it very mildly, Whirl is not many Mechs favorite bot, and who could really blame them? Whirl is aggressive, he's on a hair trigger, and regularly picks fights with any number of people for any number of reasons that may or may not only make sense to him ten minutes from now. In fact, most of the other bots on the lost light regularly attempt to distance themselves from Whirl, partly to get out of his scree trail should something horrific occur, but also because he's just plain not nice. His sense of humor ranges from mischievous to downright cruel on occasion and at first glance he has little to no respect for anyone or anything, saying whatever is on the tip of his vocalizer and the worst of it is brutally honest.
Whirl is angry, most of the time, and has very little to direct it at aside from things he can attack. Whirl is horrifically blunt, sometimes as a joke, but most of the time because it makes everyone else uncomfortable. Whirl pushes at boundaries like it's second nature, often realizing what would cause someone to react negatively and pushing that big red button just because he can. Often times it seems as though Whirl is actually trying to be as obnoxious as he possibly can, spitting random commentary no one asked for and making up for his lack of expression by being ridiculously over the top with his body language.
All of that said, and all of that aside, a lot of that is a learned reaction. The bigger badder guy wins, that little voice in your head that says 'this is right' or 'this is wrong' sucks slag, and the one who is willing to do the most damage is the one who will come out on top. The world is going to come after you, and it's going to try and hurt you, and everyone out there is out for themselves. This kind of thing was what shaped Whirl's life, from the Senate to the Dead End to the Wreckers, every part of his life has been shaped by people trying to use and manipulate him to their ends, and Whirl until recently had just kind of given up on being anything other than a tool for destruction.
At his base, Whirl does have better traits. He is willing to sacrifice himself for others, both in the short and long term, especially those he counts as something maybe like a friend. This includes jumpstarting Rewind's spark, redirecting violence at himself instead of Rung, and nearly offlining himself to get information to Cyclonus that ended up saving Tailgate's life. He has never defected from the autobots despite what others think of him. And, interestingly, he's the reason Megatron is alive, despite their very very long and complicated history, he is able to distinguish who he is angry at, which is a big deal. He's not fond of Megaton, in fact he outright hates him, but he is able to define that hatred, which is a newer development. Instead of just raging blindly at the world, he's able to tell what he's even angry for, at, and about. At this point in his development he's able to decide what things he hates more than others or even what things he cares about more than what he hates.
As time has gone on, he's begun to reach out in little ways, through joining in landing parties or becoming something of a tagalong to all sorts of adventures for the fun of it or for companionship or just because someone sort of vaguely mentioned it might be useful. He's also begun making clocks again. They're all sort of rudimentary and nothing particularly special, in fact he says there is something wrong with every single one of them, but they're a start. Whirl is attempting, his humor has begun to be more outrageous and actually funny as opposed to just mean, he actively attempts to help, even if he's still as blunt as ever, and he's able to show some kind of kindness, even though it's warped and a little sharp around the edges.
Whirl likes to present himself as unable to be harmed, with no known weaknesses and no need or want for companionship, though through his actions it's clear he does care and doesn't particularly want anyone to point out to him that his actions don't match his words on that front. Whirl will shove himself in the middle of conversations and situations, willing for the most part to give his two cents on everyone's existences, weather or not they want it. Surprisingly, Whirl's advice has been helpful more than once, mostly because he's willing to say exactly what someone doesn't want to hear, immediately to their face. It's a remarkable talent of his.
One thing that's gotten slightly better over time is the state of Whirl's mental health, which at the start of More than Meets the Eye was horrendously bad. Whirl is literally on the verge of committing suicide when we first see him after his removal from the Wreckers, and it's mentioned more than once that he is very easily triggered, literally causing a fight because someone asked him what time it was. He's gotten significantly better on at least the latter, making jokes instead of flipping out. It's a vast improvement.
Background/AU details: Here he is, the biggest jerk in the universe
Strengths & weaknesses: Positives!
- Problem solving. Seriously. Who else would go 'oh look. Time to perform emergency spark surgery without ever having done it before' and actually succeed. I mean. Megs is a alive. Still. So.
- Meticulous. Read: Watchmaker and look above at 'emergency surgery'
- Unpredictable! We're going to call this a positive.
- Intelligent. Though it's a little hard to find under the very low impulse control.
- Ridiculously high pain tolerance.
- There is a conscience in there? And he does use it on occasion.
- Really bad at being suicidal. He's not dead yet, but he has tried. A LOT.
Negative
- He has so many triggers. In early mtmte you couldn't ask him what the time was without him losing his shit. He's…getting better.
- Because of being new to having a face again, Whirl is going to have NO POKER FACE WHATSOEVER. It is going to be hilarious and by hilarious I mean terrible.
- VERY LOW IMPULSE CONTROL. You look away for ten minutes and chances are something has gone very wrong.
- is basically rage and hate wrapped up in a bright blue bullet filled package.
- Basically no sense of self preservation beyond like…wanting to go out on his own terms. Once that criteria is met then all bets are off.
- His poor human body in this game is going to need a new liver or something because he's basically a functioning alcoholic.
- You wouldn't think he has a guilt complex a mile wide but LOOK AT THAT.
- Can you say PTSD? AKA: Welcome to Transformers
Depowering/humanization:
Because Whirl is a sentient helicopter with gun tits, some humanization is going to be required. Because of this Whirl is going to show up and instead of looking like his epic self or his equally epic holoavatar (because Whirl is not the kind of character you want running around as a child for more than the occasional ridiculousness. We don't need a drunken 5 million year old mess piloting essentially a blue haired 13 year old.), he's going to be looking like a very grumpy Gaia Weiss with epic facial scarring. To translate his mutilated mess of a self, Whirl is going to be blind in one eye and have some truly horrific looking scarring on her hands and arms, making her fingers essentially fused. BUT HEY. THUMBS. THOSE ARE NEW. Also a mouth. Basically despite what one might think, it's a step up.
Placement preference: I am good with wherever. Just fuck me up.
Character goals:
-Get drunk
-Get very drunk
-Shrug and decide to fight things because why not.
-Have utter confusion about the workings of a human body
-Forget to eat.
-Get really pissed off about the gender divide and the fact that whirl's squishy body seems to be on the side people don't let fight. (Robot. Giant robot. Who only uses pronouns as a shrug whatever sort of deal. Whirl is going to be grouchy.)
-Bother the everloving hell out of Ratchet. And everyone else.
-Be that asshole teammate no one wants to admit they like.
